The Shanghai Municipal Police investigation identifies Weisz as an Austrian Jew born in Vienna on 21 September 1909, who had arrived in Shanghai with other refugees in 1939 and was working as a piece-goods salesman. He lived with his brother at 503/20 Ward Road in the designated refugee “Special Area.” Shortly before his death he visited his fiancée and then proceeded to the Medhurst Apartments on business, where witnesses saw him enter the rear staircase and jump from an opening between the tenth and ninth floors. Police examination of the scene and witness testimony led investigators to conclude that the death was suicide and that there was no evidence of foul play. No suicide note was found; acquaintances described him as nervous and troubled by unspecified personal worries. The police notified the Jewish Refugee Committee and arranged for his relatives to attend the inquest.

The dossier subsequently passed to the Chinese judicial authorities and includes interrogation records, judicial correspondence, and a formal corpse examination. The final medico-legal documentation attributes death to injuries resulting from the fall.
