Abstract

Dossier concerning Zhuang Shenshi (莊沈氏), a 27-year-old woman from Changshu, whose death in December 1944 was investigated as suicide by poisoning at No. 11, Songyin Li, Nanjing West Road. Testimony indicates that her partner or husband was frequently absent; he associated her unhappiness with his inability to spend sufficient time with her. The final forensic conclusion is 委係生前服毒身死.

Comment

The partner’s absence is a reported contextual factor rather than a proven single motive. The precise poison cannot be identified confidently, so the general contemporary formulation 服毒 is retained.
