Abstract

Dossier concerning Wang Yongju (汪永菊), a 46-year-old woman from Hangzhou, whose death in Shanghai in June 1944 was investigated as suicide by jumping from a building. The police compiled a report on the non-natural death and collected statements concerning the circumstances surrounding the incident. The file subsequently passed to the prosecutorial authorities for formal examination of the body. The judicial documentation identifies the deceased as 汪永菊, aged 46, native of Hangzhou, and records the body at Guangci Hospital (廣慈醫院) for medico-legal examination. The final medico-legal conclusion states 委係跌傷身死—that death resulted from injuries sustained in a fall.

Comment

Predominantly handwritten Chinese documents on printed police and judicial forms. The archival heading and police investigation explicitly classify the incident as 跳樓自殺 (suicide by jumping), while the formal medico-legal conclusion records the physiological cause of death more narrowly as injuries caused by the fall. The file includes police reporting, witness interrogation, correspondence requesting an inquest, and a detailed corpse examination. The surviving handwritten testimony discusses the circumstances preceding the incident, but a single precise motive cannot be established confidently enough for inclusion in the catalogue metadata. The exact address of the jump is also difficult to decipher with sufficient certainty.
